Dr. Saskia Wolf-Abdolvahab is a staff member of the Paediatric Department of Donauspital, Vienna, and has been working there since 2012. She did her residency at the Department of Paediatrics at the Wilhelminenspital in Vienna with a focus on Pulmonary and Infectious Diseases. One of her specialties was tuberculosis in Paediatrics. In context of this specialisation she first started working with refugee children and their families. Between 2009 and 2012 she volunteered for the UNHCR and worked in two different refugee communities in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. During the peak time of the refugee crisis in 2015 she continued to engage in voluntary work in Austria to ensure primary medical care for refugees. (Chapters 2-7, 11)
Dr. Regine Rath-Wacenowsky is a staff member of the Paediatric Department of Donauspital, Vienna. She first came in contact with the current refugee crisis while vacationing on Lesbos in August 2015. For three weeks, she took over the first care on the island. Back in Vienna, she cooperated in the setup of a pediatric care station on Hauptbahnhof Vienna, the main train station where most of the refugees arrived or travelled through. She also worked on Westbahnhof, another train station in Vienna, at the border in Burgenland, in Spielberg, as well as in mobile health care teams in emergency shelters and for the Red Cross in Traiskirchen. Currently, she is working at the Hotel Favorita, one of the largest shelters in Vienna. She has a joint practice with Dr. Erhart Hoffmann where she takes care of over 100 children. For over 13 years she has been attending of the Paediatric Department in Mödling, where she also took care of refugee children from the close refugee camp in Traiskirchen in a specially established outpatient clinic for refugees. Acknowledgements:
The completion of this module could not have been possible without the advice and kind support of Doz. Dr. Nicole Grois, head of the Working Group for Refugee Children of the Society for Political Paediatrics, who has prepared and published recommendations for medical measures for immigrant children and adolescents in an Austrian paediatric medical journal (Grois et al., 2016). With her voluntary engagement for this vulnerable group of people she gained a lot of experience and a keen sense of their needs. Her contributions are gratefully acknowledged.
Doz. Dr. Hans Jürgen Dornbusch, chair of the Vaccination Working Group of the European Academy of Paediatrics (EAP), has contributed his knowledge by proofreading the section about vaccinations. We appreciate the detailed input in form and content.
We further would like to thank Prof. Dr. Herbert Auer, head of the Institute of Epidemiology and Diagnostics of Helmintho-Zoonoses, Vienna, for his competent advice regarding diagnostic measures for parasitic infestations.
